Unilateral Facial Paralysis – The Journal of Pediatrics

A previously healthy 4-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a 5-dayhistory of progressive right-sided facial droop. Physical examination was remarkablefor complete right-sided flaccid paresis in all facial nerve distributions (Figure 1).On otoscopy, the patient was noted to have stenosis of the right external auditorycanal with flesh-colored papillomatous-appearing tissue obscuring the tympanic membrane.A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a destructive soft tissue lesioninvolving the external auditory canal, middle ear space, and proximal eustachian tubewith partial erosion of the carotid canal.
